Hiding Place

Have I ever told you about the time I hid in a church for more than an hour while my mother searched for me? To be fair, she was trying to take me home, and my friends and I weren’t being compliant. I hid so well that she was so close she could have reached out and smacked me; she didn’t know I was there. I had hidden myself too well. When she finally gave up, we revealed ourselves thinking we were clever. The ensuing reprimand wasn’t pretty.

I take great pride in the fact that I used to be a master hider. I have evaded detection in all sorts of situations to avoid capture, harm, and possibly even death. Hiding is an art form that must be practiced, and I spent many creative hours honing the craft. Believe it or not, as followers of God, we are called to be masters at hiding. Maybe that seems silly since we are all grownups, but Scripture reveals something we shouldn’t take lightly.

1 Peter 5:7–8 (ESV)

7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

We have an adversary, and he wants to destroy us. How then can we be watchful and free of anxiety? We need the right hiding place.

Psalm 32:7 (ESV)

7 You are a hiding place for me;

you preserve me from trouble;

you surround me with shouts of deliverance. Selah

Paul tells us that Jesus secures that hiding place for us. In him, we are safe and secure from roaring lions.

Colossians 3:1–4 (ESV)

1If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Where is your hiding place?

Eyes up,

Ryan
